Wilson Sporting Goods Company has the largest market share in the sporting and athletic goods industry, with its strongest competitors such as Anthony. The company, founded more than a century ago, has had to step up its game as IoT and data analytics have crept into the business of sports. ![]() The technology allows teams to see data on throw quality and match up results to game film. College programs such as Ohio State University use them in practice. Last year the NFL began using them for games. Wilson started putting sensors in footballs and basketballs more than a decade ago. Wilson, which also was a top 10 performer on Crain’s Most Innovative Companies list in 2016, is constantly reinventing rackets and other equipment. “Most players don’t know when to have their racket restrung,” says Bob Thurman, head of Wilson Labs. (The number of hits varies by the skill and hitting style of the user.) The biggest challenge is finding a place for the battery. The Chicago-based company developed a sensor that can count the number of times a racket hits a ball, letting players know when it’s time to restring the frame. More recently, it’s added tennis rackets to the list. Wilson Sporting Goods has put sensors in footballs, basketballs, golf balls and bats. The internet of things has taken hold in sports.
